After staring over the sea in an English seaside village (Aldeburgh) where I was a guest as a composer-in-residence for three months, I knew it: my first piece for orchestra had to be very silent. With only a few crying seagulls in the violins or an empty bag of fish and chips flying by in the trumpets. Attempt after attempt stranded on half-done sketches that disappeared into the bin one after the other. I tried to make rustling sounds swing. I tried to get squeaks ans scrapes to sing. I tried all sorts of things. But everything seemed to be too much. It had to be quiete quiet. And... 'Quite quiet' it became.
