Instrumentation: six voices (2 sopranos, 1 mezzo-soprano, 1 tenor, 1 baritone, 1 bass) Duration: ± 10 minutes First performance: 29 april 2010 in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam by the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart (Sarah Sun, Susanne Leitz-Lorey, Truike van der Poel, Martin Nagy, Guillermo Anzorena, Andreas Fischer) Written for: Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart Commissioned by: Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ / Tino Haenen Publisher: Donemus "With her newest composition Filter or Flip! for the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart Nas presents a thousand 'commandments' from newspapers and the internet. 'Make sense! Make a decision! Make a mistake!' etc." Click here for an interview with Marianne Broeder in VPRO-Gids (in Dutch) Review: "There was also a worldpremière by the Dutch composer Mayke Nas (1972), who is meanwhile working on her second composition for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In Filter or flip! she uses al sorts of slogans that tumble over each other or are held up against the light. "Buy one, get one free!" one hears for example, after which the sound is fixed in a radiant chord only to slowly slip away again. It is as absurdistic as it is beautiful. Moreover Nas excellently makes use of the qualities of the Vocalsolisten, who master the whole spectrum between opera, close harmony and avant-gardistic experiment with their gorgeous voices."
